Let's talk about King Solomon
Share
Because he was so much more than a Bible story and your practice probably already carries his fingerprints.
When most people hear King Solomon, they think Sunday school. They think the Bible story about the baby and the two women. Maybe they think Proverbs. And that's fine, that's part of it.
But if you've spent any time in this work in rootwork, in ceremonial magic, in the grimoire tradition, you know that Solomon's legacy runs so much deeper than that. This man is literally the foundation that some of the most powerful magical systems in history are built on. And I want to break that down today because I think it matters, especially right now.
SO WHO WAS HE, REALLY?
Solomon was the son of King David. He ruled Israel for about 40 years we're talking around 970 to 931 BCE. He built the First Temple in Jerusalem, which if you know anything about that time period, was a massive deal. Like, this was the spiritual center of an entire civilization.
But here's the part that always gets me: when God appeared to Solomon and said “ask for whatever you want," this man did not ask for money. Did not ask for a long life. Did not ask for his enemies to be destroyed. He asked for wisdom. For understanding. For discernment.
"Give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong." — 1 Kings 3:9
And honestly? That alone is a whole spiritual lesson. Because that is exactly the energy we try to bring into this work. You're not just throwing things at the wall hoping something sticks. You're trying to understand what you're doing, why you're doing it, and what you're actually asking for. Wisdom first. Always.
THE SPIRIT WORK NOBODY TALKS ABOUT
Here's where it gets really interesting. Across Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions and in esoteric texts that are much older than most people realize Solomon is credited with the ability to command spirits. Djinn. Demons. Angels. All of it.
There's an ancient text called the Testament of Solomon that goes into this in detail. In it, Solomon receives a ring from the archangel Michael, a ring with the seal of God on it and that ring gives him authority over the spirit world. He uses it to bind spirits and put them to work building the Temple.
But what I love about this text is how methodical it is. Solomon doesn't just run in there with power. He learns the name of each spirit. He learns what it governs, what element or planet it's tied to, and which angel has authority over it. He documents everything. It reads less like magic and more like research. Like a practitioner who actually did their homework.
That energy…. learn it, respect it, work with it intelligently is the same energy that underpins serious rootwork and conjure practice. It's not chaos. It's relationship.
WHERE THE GRIMOIRES COME IN
Over the centuries, Solomon's legacy got written down, compiled, and passed through different traditions until we ended up with what are called the Solomonic grimoires. The Key of Solomon. The Lesser Key of Solomon (which is where the Ars Goetia comes from… yes, that one). And the Grimorium Verum. These texts are full of pentacles geometric seals with divine names and planetary symbols each one built to call in a specific force. Protection. Wealth. Love. Justice. Victory in legal matters. You name it, there's probably a seal for it.
And I know pentacles can look intimidating if you're not familiar with them. But at their core, they are tools for precision. They're not vague intentions. They are specific, constructed blueprints that carry authority. When you understand what a pentacle is actually doing, it changes how you work with it completely.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOUR PRACTICE RIGHT NOW
I'm not bringing Solomon up just because it's interesting history. I'm bringing him up because I think there's a reason this is the season so many of us are being pulled back toward more structured, intentional, systematic work.
We're in a time where a lot of people are doing the work but not necessarily understanding the work. And Solomon's whole legacy is a reminder that power without wisdom is just noise. That the most potent practitioners are students first. That you have to know what you're calling, why you're calling it, and how to hold the space for what comes through.
That's what I want for everyone who comes into contact with TGC. Not just tools. Understanding. So that when you light that candle or work that lamp, you know exactly what you're doing and why it works.
Because the king didn't just build a temple. He built it with intention, with knowledge, with the right forces in alignment. And that's what we're out here doing too.
You're building your temple. Let's make sure it's standing on solid ground.
